1 Why do I need a test drive?

What is ADAS?

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) is a system in which the automobile itself grasps the surrounding information in order to realize the safety and comfort of the driver and throw and display the error and warn the driver accurately. 2 Where will the test drive be carried out?

2.1 Test drive on test course

2.1.1 Driver Test drive

2.1.3 About the test course using autonomous technology

2.2 Traveling test within the facility

Secondly, We will explain not only the test course but also the test drive within the facility.

In order to efficiently carry out running test under various conditions, there are cases where running tests using facilities are carried out.

As an example, there are tests using a chassis dynamometer and tests using a shaker. By using equipment, we can automate the test and repeat test etc. using machinery dedicated to equipment which is essential for the evaluation of durability. In addition, tests using wind tunnels and measurement of exhaust gases such as measurement difficulties are also carried out in the test drives of the driver.

As a new effort for indoor test drive, tests are being conducted at facilities that can be tested by changing the natural environment such as rain and environmental brightness to evaluate the function of ADAS. There is a test course called the Natural Environment Test Building in DENSO CORPORATION.

The main feature of this test building is that it can reproduce nighttime and rainy weather.
According to the Traffic Accident Comprehensive Analysis Center (ITARDA), about 70% of pedestrian fatal accidents occur at night, and it is more likely to cause an accident even in rainy days when it is difficult to secure visibility compared to sunny weather.

Even in such a high accident risk situation, ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance System) such as automatic brakes can function properly in this test building so that it can evaluate performance.
It is possible to run test vehicles with a straight course with a total length of 200 m and a width of 10 m installed indoors and ensuring the reproducibility of the environment.

Although it may be difficult to possess such large-scale facilities, it is expected that in the future it will become necessary to change the environmental conditions and to make it possible for the actual vehicle to travel.

2.3 Test drive on public road

Finally, We will explain test runs on public roads.

The primary aim of running tests on public roads is to gather data on various driving scenes and collect actual performance data in customer's driving environment.

However, the position and purpose of running tests on public roads will differ depending on the development phase.

We will explain about the image of the aim of the running test in each phase below.

2.3.1 Research Phase

In the research phase, there is a high need to take data traveling with various sensors attached.

For example, in studies on driver behavior, we run with a brain wave sensor and a driver monitoring camera to analyze the motion sensor, fatigue degree, concentration, emotion to see the behavior and movement of the driver.
Also, in order to grasp the traffic environment of emerging countries and so on, to measure the surrounding information of the running car, patterns etc. that run with riders and reference sensors etc. are measured examples.

In the research phase, various data are comprehensively measured, running tests are conducted for the purpose of investigating which sensor signals and parameters can be triggered and parameters for performing ADAS, and investigating the relationship and correlation.

2.3.2 Development Phase

In the development phase, evaluation of new sensors during prototype development, comparison of benchmarks of sensors of other companies, determine the scene to support driving assistance from the driving information of the vehicle and to consider its support timing and necessity, we will measure traveling data under various conditions and places.

2.3.3 Mass production phase

In the mass production phase, vehicles before factory shipment, which are sold as new cars, will verify the operation and functionality of the developed technology, parts and sensors in the market.
Also, in this phase, it is necessary to confirm not only the function of ADAS but also factors that affect performance and sensibility such as fuel consumption, vehicle behavior, engine and running sound, etc.

In order to comprehensively check the operation in every scene, there are cases where multiple measuring vehicles are prepared and data is measured across the country and around the world.

3 Handling of traveling data

Recently, along with the development of ADAS and Autonomous Driving function, sensors and controls installed in automobiles are increasing, so there are tendencies to install measuring devices such as various sensors and cameras for evaluation.
