Narita International Airport to uphold demonstration test of Autonomous Driving vehicle in its restricted areas
AIRO Inc. (hereinafter “AIRO”) , a joint venture of Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter “Marubeni”) and ZMP Inc. (hereinafter “ZMP”) is a subsidiary of Narita International Airport Corporation (hereinafter "NAA") will carry out Autonomous driving vehicle demonstration experiment for three days from January 28 to 30 this year within the restricted area of Narita International Airport operated by Ministry of Land,Infrastructure,Transport and Tourism.
In order to cope up with the labor shortage for ground handling work necessary when aircraft arrive and depart. This is due to the increase in the number of flights arriving and departing from Japan as a result of the increase in Inbound Visitors and the decrease in working age population. Marubeni which has wide knowledge and know-how in the field of aviation and ZMP , a pioneer in the development of Autonomous driving technology is aiming for mass production. Marubeni and ZMP have teamed up to jointly establish AIRO , which has been preparing for this demonstration experiment as a practitioner of "Demonstration experiment on Autonomous driving within the airport restricted area" operated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure ,Transport and Tourism.
In this demonstration experiment, the opted route is of the Ground handling staff of Swissport Japan established by Marubeni and is planned to use Autonomous vehicle developed by ZMP. Through this demonstration experiment, we will confirm the issues and collect data on using Autonomous driving vehicles in the airport restricted area where environment and rules are different from public roads.
NAA aiming for high quality airport, together with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism aims to support the ground handling work supporting the safe operation of aircraft. We also cooperate fully in this demonstration experiment, including support on safety aspects.
Based on the results and issues of this demonstration experiment, we will continue to promote the use of Autonomous driving technology within the restricted areas of Narita International Airport.
