Stereo camera RoboVision® 2 used at Toyota Institute of Technology Smart Vehicle Research Center to study the development of robust stereo technology to changes in driving environment

- Examination of measures to cope with bad weather such as rain and snow and changes in sunny conditions -

RoboVision® 2, a stereo camera by ZMP Inc. (Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, CEO: Taniguchi Hisashi , hereinafter referred to as ZMP), is used at Toyota Industry University Smart Vehicle Research Center for development of recognition technology using camera images.We are pleased to announce the case introduction in detail.

This case was presented at Professor Emeritus Toyoda Institute of Technology Professor Seiichi Mita at the 10th ZMP Forum held on July 18, 2018 and he gave a lecture on the latest research results.We introduce our efforts and the latest in recognition technology utilizing stereo cameras.

Toyoda Institute of Technology Smart Vehicle Research Center is promoting R & D on driving assistance systems that are safe for elderly people and driving beginners and have less burden on the environment. Specifically, the computer detects various objects such as a pedestrian, a vehicle, a road, a white line, and the like based on information obtained from a sensor such as a TV camera, a laser scanner, a GPS (global positioning system) We are developing technologies that can recognize the running environment. In this research and development, RoboVision® 2 is a method of constructing a recognition system that is resistant to changes in driving environments such as snowfall, rain, nighttime, fog, etc., as "Study of stereo technology robust to changes in driving environment" by cameras.We have constructed an algorithm that can measure more reliably the disturbance of the front of the camera such as wiper and snow by measuring the distance based on the reliability distribution for the matching image.

RoboVision® 2, which has been used at the Center is widely used in automotive / component manufacturers and research institutes such as universities for developing ADAS and Autonomous Driving technology. The stereo camera unit "RoboVision®" series is equipped with RoboVision® 2s, whose distance accuracy has been greatly improved by hardware improvement, software for object detection and inter-vehicle distance measurement by a stereo camera and IMX390 high-sensitivity CMOS sensor for automotive use made by Sony.We have a lineup of RoboVision® 3, a four-lens stereo camera with a detection range of up to 150 m and a horizontal 110 °.

ZMP will continue to contribute to the improvement of Autonomous Driving technology through ADAS/ Autonomous Driving development support tools, sensors and services.
